Research Facility


To promote reduction of the new drug development period and enhancement of efficiency in API manufacturing, our experienced research staff has been engaged in research and development of safe, robust and highly productive processes by capitalizing on Juzen Chemical’s long nurtured knowledge on process chemistry and process engineering.

The staff researchers well versed in GMP and manufacturing facilities conduct experiments, assuming commercial scale production even from the stage of laboratory study to identify challenges in advance that may arise during scale-up. They strongly support secure and prompt supply of APIs for investigational drugs and smooth transfer to commercial production.

Synthesis Technology

The organic synthesis technologies are Juzen Chemical’s core technologies which have been nurtured and accumulated over the past 50 years.

We are particularly confident in our scale-up study programs and know-how for industrialization, and we excel in the industrialization study of the basic processes disclosed by our customers.

Main Facilities

The R&D Center (Cuore), completed in June 2013, is equipped with instruments listed below to conduct safety evaluation of used compounds and reactions and containment of hazardous materials, as well as research and development of processes.

In 2021, nucleic acid oligomer synthesis equipment was installed, allowing for contract manufacturing of samples.


General Laboratory

In this laboratory, process development research from several-gram to hundreds-gram scales and overall scale-up studies are conducted.

In the experiment area which is segregated from the office area with glass, a draft chamber with an automatic fire extinguishing system for all-night experiments is installed to ensure workers’ health and safety. Furthermore, process tracing analysis with HPLC is performed concurrently in line with the reaction, achieving efficient experimental studies.


Hazard & Clean Laboratory

Equipped with containment function and Class 100,000 cleanliness. This laboratory is suitable for research of highly potent APIs.

Chemical hazard chamber (CHC) and balance enclosures (BE) are installed in the laboratory.
Containment performance is confirmed to be OEL 1μg/m3 or less (measured against SMEPAC standards)


Safety Research Laboratory

To ensure steady implementation of preliminary safety assessments and process optimization studies, identification of potential safety issues of components and process and prediction of problems that may arise during scale-up are carried out by using DSC and reaction calorimeters (such as EasyMax), thereby we pursue establishment of a safe and robust process from the earlier stage.


Walk-in Draft Laboratory

This laboratory is for hydrogenation experiments by using autoclaves and Kilo lab experiments on a 10L scale.

For safety care, a hydrogen detector is equipped.


Development Analysis Room

This laboratory is equipped with analytical instruments, including LC-MS, GC, and KF, enabling assignment/identification of impurities and crystal polymorphism investigation by using together with NMR, XRD, FT-IR, etc. in the adjacent Analytical Research Center, facilitating speeding-up of process development.

Meeting Rooms

The R&D Center has two meeting rooms, one large and one small.
On fine days, a beautiful view of the Tateyama Mountain Range can be enjoyed.

Shonan Laboratory

In January 2021, we opened a research laboratory in the Shonan Health Innovation Park (commonly known as Shonan iPark) as our base where we can conduct research and development at a closer location to our customers.
